No More Orange!

Saturday, July 23rd, 2011

Discolored, streaky, and uneven… the best way to describe the results of a “spray tan”.  These people are easy to pick out of a crowd. You know… the ones that are un-naturally tan with a hint of orange tint to their skin.

I remember back in high school, it was the week of prom and all of the girls just had to be as dark as they could get.  I can still distinctly remember the ones who went into a spray tanning booth.  The real give away was when they would wave at you… the palms of their hands were so discolored and streaky that you would question if they were dirty or not.

Ever since then I haven’t been too fond of spray tans… then I found out there was an alternative, St. Tropez Airbrush Tanning.

With St. Tropez, you get a more natural looking tan with even results.  This “airbrush tan” is applied in precise amounts and it’s customizable, you can decide if you only want certain areas to be tan.  Whereas with a “spray tan,” a booth will spray your whole body making your already tan areas darker and it will miss small areas here and there. Where did The Service Go? Here, of Course!

Thursday, February 17th, 2011

Women love to shop and some guys do, too.  I used to spend many precious hours of my time shopping for just the right shoes, just the right jeans, just the right spa service… for just the right price.  I used to be able to rely on the friendly sales person or service provider for any extra information I needed… and maybe they had a little experience with what I was looking for too.  But lately I’ve found that kind of  “service” to be non-existent.

I may be over 40…okay…50, but I’m still in the loop and I’ve discovered GOOGLE!  You can find almost any type of information you need on what I call “the best invention since false eyelashes”. But getting through all the wordiness (is that even a word?) typically associated with whatever it is you are trying to find “the best of” … brings me to my knees!  I am finding that I spend almost just as much time searcing the web as I used to spend trekking around in my Sketcher Shape-ups… spending my hard earned dollars on gas driving from store to store!

So what’s my point?  While spending thousands of hours working in the skincare/customer service industry, I’ve quizzed my clients on exactly what it is they are looking for… what results are they expecting… and giving them opinions based on those many years of experience.  And boy have I had experiences!

Ok, so here it is!  The looking is over!  You’ve found it… I’ve created it!  The perfect facial, the perfect waxing, and the perfectly relaxing professional experience… With the results you’ve only HEARD about.  Wow, does it feel good knowing that every time you come to Kimberly Spa for a service, you’ll walk out completely satisfied!  Now if only shopping for nude colored, platform heels was this easy!

Menopause AND Acne? Thanks!

Tuesday, December 7th, 2010

Now I know why they call menopause “the change of life”.  Mood swings, anxiety and night sweats, oh my!  But now pimples too???   I already cry when they send a Biggest Loser contestant home!   Far beyond my freshman year, I’ve packed on the freshman 15….ok 20, but who’s counting…. Please stop counting!  But now Mother Hormone has given me the skin of a 13 year old girl entering puberty?

How interesting that all of the women that have crossed over “the change” tell you all the wonders of menopause – no cramps, no bloating, no monthly visit from Aunt Flow…sounds great, right?  But what about the ACNE???  No one mentioned this to me!  Will my little pink estrogen pill help with that too?  Sadly …no.

At least 10% of women suffer from menopausal acne.  Hormonal changes during menopause, are a lot like the ones we experience during puberty.  And I don’t know about you, but please put that at the top of my list of times I do not want to revisit.  Our skin has glands that produce oil, known as Sebum.  Although our skin cells die and regenerate, during hormone changes this becomes exasperated.  Therefore, we end up with more oil and dead skin cells than we want or need.  Hair follicles will be more likely to become clogged with dead skin cells and Sebum during our hormone rages, thus causing pimples.   So what do we do to end these frustrating little bumps? Understanding Skin Care Lingo

Friday, September 10th, 2010

These days we are bombarded with information from TV, radio, billboards, print and the internet.  This can get quite confusing when you know you want to improve your skin but don’tKimberly Spa Facials know who to trust and how to communicate your concerns.  Hopefully we can help with a little technical jargon of some common skin conditions to get you asking the right questions.  Knowledge is key in gaining results!

Hyperpigmentation-  Darkening of the skin in areas due to sun exposure, a wound, inflammation, acne or injury.  Hyperpigmentation can be temporary or permanent. Also known as sun spots, age spots, liver spots, or  larger areas of hyperpigmentation can occur during pregnancy, known as melasma.  Common Treatments: Skin lightening serum or cream like Visual Changes Lightening Serum daily and facial treatments like chemical peels, microdermabrasion and Photo Rejuvenation based on your esthetician’s advice.

Broken Capillaries-  Small red or pink threads under the skin’s surface commonly found on the cheeks or nose area.   These occur when capillary walls narrow and (more…)

Treat Summer Skin with a Pevonia RS2 Facial

Thursday, August 12th, 2010

“Summer really jacks with my skin! I stay out of the sun as much as possible…wear a hat… use a high SPF Sunscreen… I’m always searching for shade! My skin feels really rough and dry… I mean really sandpaper-like. And I always feel like my nose is so red and is ready to explode off my face! I’ve tried to cover it with make-up but it just isn’t working. I need help!”

Pevonia RS2 LineThis is a scenario I put together from the many different clients that have come to me with this typical summer skin problem. The answer is skin treatments and nutrition. I’ve done a lot of research pertaining to irritated skin and I can tell you with great certainty that the Pevonia RS2 Facial Treatment will calm down, sooth and cool off your hot, swollen, aching, acne skin. I’ve seen it a hundred times! This treatment really excites me because you can see the difference in just one treatment. So imagine what regular treatments every 2 to 3 weeks could do!

We’ll make sure you’re facial bed is comfortable, the music is soothing and you’ll realize that this treatment isn’t about putting “stuff” on your skin. Your (more…)

Anti-Aging From the Inside Out

Wednesday, July 14th, 2010

As a kid, our loving parents doled out the fruity flavored chewable vitamins before breakfast or bedtime, and we gladly chomped away at them as more of a treat than a chore.  Things are not as easy these days.

Anti-Aging Skin CareMost of us don’t have a handy assistant ready to give us our daily intake of vitamins, and prepare our well-balanced meals for the day.  It’s easy to forget about putting proper nutrition and vitamins in our bodies to fuel us for our busy lives, and treat our bodies well.

Good nutrition is key in having healthy and glowing skin.  If you want a beautiful garden, you fertilize the soil to make it rich and ready to grow big beautiful plants.  Well, your skin is the plant and vitamins are the fertilizer!  We are all really good at applying our anti-aging creams and getting our facials every month, but we forget about what goes in must come out.

Pevonia Botanica has really addressed this with their Pevo-Vital drink mixes that are full of complexion boosting anti-oxidants.  They remind us of taking the fruity vitamins as a kid, only they are perfect for on the go moms, dads, professionals, and hectic men and women.  You simply add the powder pouch to your water bottle, shake and enjoy!  Yum!

Some vitamins are effective for skin both internally and externally.  Vitamin A can help fight wrinkles and even acne when it is applied externally to (more…)

My Plastic Surgeon’s Advice…

Wednesday, June 23rd, 2010

Kimberly Owner/Esthetician, Kimberly SpaMy Plastic Surgeon’s Advice… was for me to get a total and complete blethroplasty!  What?!  Come on, really?!  Okay, let me start from the beginning because I have so many of my loyal clients asking my advice on Facial Plastic Surgery.

I had noticed a small brown spot on my right shin that through up a red flag.  Just to get it checked out, I scheduled an appointment with a plastic surgeon that did a scar revision on my arm a few years ago, and I thought he did a great job.  The doctor was flanked by a pretty young lady standing beside him taking notes.  He sat down in front of me and took a brief look at my suspicious spot and said, “This is nothing, is there anything else I can do for you?”  Immediately my over-active (more…)

Finding the Perfect Spa Package

Thursday, May 27th, 2010

Kimberly Spa Packages and Gift CertificatesAh yes, the glazed look on a man’s face when he stops in to buy a gift certificate is priceless. Some people have just never been to a spa before and don’t quite understand what it is we do and how we do it. We blame this on movies and television that show a group of four girls lined up on massage tables in a wet room with a big bathtub of mud to sit in after. Places like this do exist and yep, they’ll clean out your wallet. These types of spas are relaxing, but they don’t tend to offer lasting results, and you won’t find too many in little ‘ole Nebraska!

If you’d like to book a “spa day,” here are some great things to consider:

1. What is your budget? We offer a number of packages that range from about $70 for a Foot Detox Package, all the (more…)

Quality VS Quantity Vol. 3: The Brazilian Wax

Friday, May 21st, 2010

Kimberly Spa Brazilian WaxWomen think Brazilian wax and then immediately think, “Ouch!”  Men think Brazilian waxand think, “Oo-La-La!”  We think we’ve bridged that gap between the “ouch” and the “oo-la-la”.

Settle down guys, women don’t go to their waxing appointments for the sole purpose of your happiness!  Women who wax say they feel more comfortable and clean.  It also beats out the competition for ease and convenience on a daily basis.  You’re not left with sandpaper stubble, nicks and cuts, and you don’t need to worry about it EVERY day!  Waxing is usually done every 4-6 weeks depending on the rate of an individual’s hair growth.  When your re-growth starts to appear, you notice that it’s softer and less noticeable!  Regular waxing clients usually see a gradual regression in the amount of hair they have in the area.  So if you start waxing now, by next summer, you might just see a little “barely-there” hair!

Ok, so let’s address the “ouch” factor to Brazilian waxing.  Your initial wax will be uncomfortable, we can’t lie.  Here are some tips that will help with your first visit:

#1 Try to relax.  If you are tense the experience will be made even more uncomfortable.
