Why Water?

Thursday, September 15th, 2011

Monday through Friday, 9-5…and once that afternoon stretch hits you seem to start dragging.  Tired, can’t concentrate?  Most people would never think of grabbing a glass of water, but this could be just what you need.

Not drinking enough water can be the problem to several of your bodily aches pains and dysfunctions.  Next to air, water is the element most necessary for survival, making up 60-70% of the body.  H2O assists with digestion, metabolism and joint lubrication.  Lack of  water intake can cause the digestive system to be less effective; increasing body fat, toxicity in the body; causing heart burn and stomach aches, poor muscle and size, and joint and muscle soreness.  Digestion and metabolism cannot happen effectively without the dilution and lubrication of fluids.  Kidneys remove uric acid and urea…these need to be diluted down otherwise they build up and can cause kidney stones.  Dehydration may (more…)

Quick Tips For The Outdoors!

Sunday, September 4th, 2011

I have a friend that said I looked really happy in this photo.  I was, and I am every time I get to spend time with my horse!  I think that everyone needs to get themselves outside and into nature as often as they can.  However you choose to spend your outdoor time, taking care of your skin can be simple as long as you remember to ‘Prepare, Prevent & Preserve’ the health of your skin!  When you dress to go outside you think about the weather, the temperature etc…right?  Do the same for your skin…to help prepare for the day.  If your skin is oily or acne prone make sure to wash your face as soon as you’re done sweating to help prevent those annoying breakouts.  I have an easy, inexpensive way for you to be more proactive…Wet some Viva paper towels with distilled water, add 1 very small drop of your Visual Changes Skin Clearing Cleanser to each towel and place in a zippy bag.  Voila! You’re ready for even the most rugged outdoor activities!  Sunscreen, of course, is a must have item for your outdoor lifestyle that will help prepare, prevent and preserve your skin.  Prevent new sun damage while preserving the moisture you already have.  We carry Cotz SPF Sunscreen’s with SPF’s from 58-60.  You can even get them with a hint of tint added to help hide any dark spots that you may already have…cool huh?!  Head outside and have some fun!

What Does Your Sunscreen Really Do For You?

Monday, August 8th, 2011

Have you ever wondered if that thick, white, pasty lotion you use during the summer is actually doing what it says on the container?  Well if you’re most people, it may not be.  Protecting your skin is a tricky business and a confusing one at that, so I’ve tried to simplifiy the sunscreen/sunblock, SPF, and UVA/UVB conundrum so you can be confidant in your sunscreen.

In order to choose a correct sunscreen, you need to understand the differences between UVA and UVB rays.  UVA (ultraviolet-A) are long-wave solar rays that are less likely to cause sunburn; however, they penetrate the skin more deeply and contribute the most to photo-aging.  Recent studies also show that UVA increase UVB’s cancer-causing effects.  UVB (ultraviolet-B) are short-wave solar rays that are more likely to sunburn; however, these rays are considered the main cause of basal and squamous cell carcinomas as well as significant cause of melanoma.

Now that you’re armed with UV information, let’s talk about the why some sun protection is called sunscreen or sunblock. (more…)

No More Orange!

Saturday, July 23rd, 2011

Discolored, streaky, and uneven… the best way to describe the results of a “spray tan”.  These people are easy to pick out of a crowd. You know… the ones that are un-naturally tan with a hint of orange tint to their skin.

I remember back in high school, it was the week of prom and all of the girls just had to be as dark as they could get.  I can still distinctly remember the ones who went into a spray tanning booth.  The real give away was when they would wave at you… the palms of their hands were so discolored and streaky that you would question if they were dirty or not.

Ever since then I haven’t been too fond of spray tans… then I found out there was an alternative, St. Tropez Airbrush Tanning.

With St. Tropez, you get a more natural looking tan with even results.  This “airbrush tan” is applied in precise amounts and it’s customizable, you can decide if you only want certain areas to be tan.  Whereas with a “spray tan,” a booth will spray your whole body making your already tan areas darker and it will miss small areas here and there. Menopause AND Acne? Thanks!

Tuesday, December 7th, 2010

Now I know why they call menopause “the change of life”.  Mood swings, anxiety and night sweats, oh my!  But now pimples too???   I already cry when they send a Biggest Loser contestant home!   Far beyond my freshman year, I’ve packed on the freshman 15….ok 20, but who’s counting…. Please stop counting!  But now Mother Hormone has given me the skin of a 13 year old girl entering puberty?

How interesting that all of the women that have crossed over “the change” tell you all the wonders of menopause – no cramps, no bloating, no monthly visit from Aunt Flow…sounds great, right?  But what about the ACNE???  No one mentioned this to me!  Will my little pink estrogen pill help with that too?  Sadly …no.

At least 10% of women suffer from menopausal acne.  Hormonal changes during menopause, are a lot like the ones we experience during puberty.  And I don’t know about you, but please put that at the top of my list of times I do not want to revisit.  Our skin has glands that produce oil, known as Sebum.  Although our skin cells die and regenerate, during hormone changes this becomes exasperated.  Therefore, we end up with more oil and dead skin cells than we want or need.  Hair follicles will be more likely to become clogged with dead skin cells and Sebum during our hormone rages, thus causing pimples.   So what do we do to end these frustrating little bumps? Friday, September 10th, 2010

Also known as sun spots, age spots, liver spots, or  larger areas of hyperpigmentation can occur during pregnancy, known as melasma.  Common Treatments: Skin lightening serum or cream like Visual Changes Lightening Serum daily and facial treatments like chemical peels, microdermabrasion and Photo Rejuvenation based on your esthetician’s advice.

Anti-Aging From the Inside Out

Wednesday, July 14th, 2010

As a kid, our loving parents doled out the fruity flavored chewable vitamins before breakfast or bedtime, and we gladly chomped away at them as more of a treat than a chore.  Things are not as easy these days.

Anti-Aging Skin CareMost of us don’t have a handy assistant ready to give us our daily intake of vitamins, and prepare our well-balanced meals for the day.  It’s easy to forget about putting proper nutrition and vitamins in our bodies to fuel us for our busy lives, and treat our bodies well.

Good nutrition is key in having healthy and glowing skin.  If you want a beautiful garden, you fertilize the soil to make it rich and ready to grow big beautiful plants.  Well, your skin is the plant and vitamins are the fertilizer!  We are all really good at applying our anti-aging creams and getting our facials every month, but we forget about what goes in must come out.

Pevonia Botanica has really addressed this with their Pevo-Vital drink mixes that are full of complexion boosting anti-oxidants.  They remind us of taking the fruity vitamins as a kid, only they are perfect for on the go moms, dads, professionals, and hectic men and women.  You simply add the powder pouch to your water bottle, shake and enjoy!  Yum!

Some vitamins are effective for skin both internally and externally.  Vitamin A can help fight wrinkles and even acne when it is applied externally to (more…)

Is SPF Really Important for My Skin?

Tuesday, June 15th, 2010

Fallene Cotz Water Resistant SPF 58Some men and women would run to buy a new miracle product that has been proven to keep your skin looking as young as possible for as long as possible. And some of you will also say to yourself, “That product just doesn’t and will never exist.” Well, you’re wrong.

The miracle anti-aging product that most of us already have on hand is…. You guessed it, sunscreen. Sun damage, or Photo Damage, is the #1 cause of the appearance of aged skin. It breaks down your collagen and elastin production causing skin to sag, droop, and wrinkle. Sun damage also causes dark spots, freckling and uneven skin tone, or “hyperpigmentation” that can be buried deep within your skin layers and show up years later. Of course there is always the looming dark cloud of skin cancer that can pop up on you.

Using SPF, or skin care products containing SPF, is really the best way to insure your beautiful skin to stay fit for longer. (more…)
