Clean Your Brushes!

Monday, May 14th, 2012

Cleaning your make-up brushes is so important.  Making sure to clean them each week will help prevent the spread of bacteria…thereby keeping your skin healthier!

I love Youngblood Make-Up Brush Cleaner.  It does a fantastic job without leaving a sticky residue on my brushes…and that’s also what we use here at the spa!  To clean your brushes:

*Apply the brush cleaner to a clean towel (not the brush itself).  Rub the brush, gently, in a circular motion.  Although you may see a few bristles on the towel don’t worry…just continue until you don’t see any more make-up transferring to the towel.

When you want to do a thorough cleaning of your brushes, use an Ultra Gentle Cleanser (NO Salicylic Wash or Acids…those will break down the bristles of your brush) and water.  Just a pea sized amount of cleanser will do the trick.  Use a clean towel just as mentioned before and rub brush in a circular motion until make-up is gone.  Rinse with clear water and squeeze out excess.

After cleaning brushes make sure to air-dry them at an angle. This prevents any remaining water from running down into the base of the brush, which can break down the bonding in the handle.

Following these simple steps just once a week will keep your brushes in tip-top shape, and your skin will thank you for it!

Feeling Stressed?

Monday, November 14th, 2011

Feeling stressed?

The holiday season is creeping up on us quick!  This time of the year can cause a lot of stress.

While everyone knows that stress can take a toll on a person physically and psychologically, it also can lead to other problems, such as acne, brittle nails or even hair loss.  When you become stressed, your cortisol level rises.  This in turn causes an increase in oil production, which can lead to oily skin, acne and other related skin problems. Professionals have also found that stress has a negative effect on the barrier function of the skin, resulting in water loss that inhibits the skin’s ability to repair itself after an injury.  Scientist’s and Doctor’s have said that skin rejuvenation procedures such as Facials, Pedicures, Massages, (more…)

Microdermabrasion!

Tuesday, October 18th, 2011

If your skin is dull and lifeless…microdermabrasion may be the answer, and it is my favorite service!

Fall is an awesome time to concentrate on reversing any damage that has been done during those harsh summer days.  Or maybe you have acne scars that you are self-conscious about…microdermabrasion is a non-invasive treatment that exfoliates the dermis (outer layer of skin) and gets rid of those pesky dead skin cells.  Your skin becomes smooth, has more of an even texture, and there is NO down time…and that is after just ONE treatment!  Just imagine how fresh, smooth, and luminous your skin will look after the recommended 4-8 weekly treatments!

One of my favorite things about micro’s (for short) is that it stimulates collagen, which is responsible for keeping the skin hydrated and helps prevent fine lines & wrinkles.  It also helps to increase cell turnover aiding in the removal of blackheads & acne scarring.

Microdermabrasion is (in my humble opinion) one of the BEST things you can do for your skin without using lasers or botox…or, needless to say, ”going under the knife”!

Guys, You Have Never Been To A Spa?

Tuesday, October 11th, 2011

Maybe you should try it!   Whether you are looking for hair removal, acne treatments, rejuvenation, anti-aging or just plain old stress reduction, at Kimberly Spa we take pride in addressing your individual concerns.

My own father was very reluctant to get spa treatments when I became an esthetician 15 years ago.   He is an “old-school” kind of guy…raised in an era when men never got these types of treatments.   At first, I had to talk him in to it…but now he is not only comfortable getting treatments, he actually looks forward to them!   He leaves feeling refreshed, with unclogged pores and with  younger, healthier looking skin.

A first-time male client (age 50+) who had never been into a spa before describes his experience…”I had a good feeling as soon as I walked in to Kimberly Spa.   It was luxurious, and comfortable…while still being clinically professional.   They earned my trust.”

Ladies, if you have a boyfriend, brother, father, spouse or just a good male friend who is curious about what a “spa experience” is all about…share our “Look Good~Feel Good” secret and send them to Kimberly Spa!   They will love it just as much as you do, and it will be an experience they’ll never forget!

Pumpkin!

Wednesday, September 21st, 2011

Ever get sick of throwing out the “guts” of your pumpkin while carving them?  You don’t have to anymore! Pumpkin is great for keeping your skin looking fabulous in between facial appointments here at Kimberly Spa!  Pumpkin is rich in  essential vitamins and nutrients necessary for healthy and radiant skin.

Pumpkin is good for all skin types, especially the ones born in the ‘baby oil era’ who now suffer from hyperpigmentation.  It is rich in vitamin A (retinol), which soothes and softens your skin, and vitamin C (an antioxidant that can help to remedy damage produced by free radicals).

Pumpkin also has a high enzyme content which helps dissolve dead/dry skin, helps remove old surface skin cells and even promotes new cell production.  (more…)

Acne

Saturday, August 6th, 2011

Don’t you hate feeling like a teen as an adult? Adult acne is tough to get rid of since it is generally not a sign of bad hygiene but is a sign of hormone imbalances. As someone who suffers from pretty bad adult acne, I have tried just about everything. When I started here at Kimberly Spa, my face was a mess (and still sometimes gets that way).  I got started on a skin care regimen which helped immensely but I still had scarring there as a reminder. Here at Kimberly Spa, we not only have some amazing products, but we also have some great services that help with active acne and we also have services to help get rid of that oh so lovely scarring.

The first step to clearing up your face is to get on a good regimen. We have several good cleansers for acne prone skin. My favorite is the Pevonia Spa Teen line and the Agera Salicylic wash. We have plenty of different spot treatments as well. The biggest thing is to not forget to moisturize your face! Most people with acne prone or oily skin don’t think they need to moisturize but that is incorrect. If you don’t moisturize, your skin will become dehydrated causing more severe issues then the acne itself. Your Esthetician can prescribe the regimen that best fits your skin type.

Menopause AND Acne? Thanks!

Tuesday, December 7th, 2010

Now I know why they call menopause “the change of life”.  Mood swings, anxiety and night sweats, oh my!  But now pimples too???   I already cry when they send a Biggest Loser contestant home!   Far beyond my freshman year, I’ve packed on the freshman 15….ok 20, but who’s counting…. Please stop counting!  But now Mother Hormone has given me the skin of a 13 year old girl entering puberty?

How interesting that all of the women that have crossed over “the change” tell you all the wonders of menopause – no cramps, no bloating, no monthly visit from Aunt Flow…sounds great, right?  But what about the ACNE???  No one mentioned this to me!  Will my little pink estrogen pill help with that too?  Sadly …no.

At least 10% of women suffer from menopausal acne.  Hormonal changes during menopause, are a lot like the ones we experience during puberty.  And I don’t know about you, but please put that at the top of my list of times I do not want to revisit.  Our skin has glands that produce oil, known as Sebum.  Although our skin cells die and regenerate, during hormone changes this becomes exasperated.  Therefore, we end up with more oil and dead skin cells than we want or need.  Hair follicles will be more likely to become clogged with dead skin cells and Sebum during our hormone rages, thus causing pimples.   So what do we do to end these frustrating little bumps? Understanding Skin Care Lingo

Friday, September 10th, 2010

These days we are bombarded with information from TV, radio, billboards, print and the internet.  This can get quite confusing when you know you want to improve your skin but don’tKimberly Spa Facials know who to trust and how to communicate your concerns.  Hopefully we can help with a little technical jargon of some common skin conditions to get you asking the right questions.  Knowledge is key in gaining results!

Hyperpigmentation-  Darkening of the skin in areas due to sun exposure, a wound, inflammation, acne or injury.  Hyperpigmentation can be temporary or permanent. Also known as sun spots, age spots, liver spots, or  larger areas of hyperpigmentation can occur during pregnancy, known as melasma.  Common Treatments: Skin lightening serum or cream like Visual Changes Lightening Serum daily and facial treatments like chemical peels, microdermabrasion and Photo Rejuvenation based on your esthetician’s advice.

Broken Capillaries-  Small red or pink threads under the skin’s surface commonly found on the cheeks or nose area.   These occur when capillary walls narrow and (more…)

Thursday, August 12th, 2010

“Summer really jacks with my skin! I stay out of the sun as much as possible…wear a hat… use a high SPF Sunscreen… I’m always searching for shade! Anti-Aging From the Inside Out

Wednesday, July 14th, 2010

As a kid, our loving parents doled out the fruity flavored chewable vitamins before breakfast or bedtime, and we gladly chomped away at them as more of a treat than a chore.  Things are not as easy these days.

Anti-Aging Skin CareMost of us don’t have a handy assistant ready to give us our daily intake of vitamins, and prepare our well-balanced meals for the day.  It’s easy to forget about putting proper nutrition and vitamins in our bodies to fuel us for our busy lives, and treat our bodies well.

Good nutrition is key in having healthy and glowing skin.  If you want a beautiful garden, you fertilize the soil to make it rich and ready to grow big beautiful plants.  Well, your skin is the plant and vitamins are the fertilizer!  We are all really good at applying our anti-aging creams and getting our facials every month, but we forget about what goes in must come out.

Pevonia Botanica has really addressed this with their Pevo-Vital drink mixes that are full of complexion boosting anti-oxidants.  They remind us of taking the fruity vitamins as a kid, only they are perfect for on the go moms, dads, professionals, and hectic men and women.  You simply add the powder pouch to your water bottle, shake and enjoy!  Yum!

Some vitamins are effective for skin both internally and externally.  Vitamin A can help fight wrinkles and even acne when it is applied externally to (more…)
